Most homeowners don’t realise that stored timber can attract termites just as easily as structural wood.

During a recent inspection, we discovered active termites inside old pallets stored in the subfloor area of a home.

From above, everything looked fine.

Underneath the house, however, the pallets had become the perfect food source.

Why Timber Pallets Attract Termites

Timber pallets are:

  • Untreated or low-grade timber
  • Often damp in subfloor environments
  • In direct contact with soil
  • Left undisturbed for long periods

This creates ideal conditions for termite colonies to establish themselves.

Once termites infest pallets, it’s only a matter of time before they move to:

  • Floor joists
  • Bearers
  • Structural supports
  • Wall framing

Why This Is Dangerous

Subfloor infestations are especially concerning because:

  • They are hidden
  • Damage spreads quietly
  • Structural timber may already be compromised before detection

In this case, the termites were already beginning to explore nearby structural timbers.

The pallets acted as the starting point.

What Homeowners Should Avoid

Never store:

  • Timber offcuts
  • Pallets
  • Firewood
  • Cardboard boxes

Under or against your home.

Even if you think the timber is “dry” or “temporary,” termites only need a small opportunity.

The Bigger Lesson

Termites don’t just attack houses randomly.

They exploit conditions that make access easy.

Stored timber under a home is one of the most common risk factors we see.

Regular inspections are the only reliable way to detect hidden termite activity before major damage occurs.

If you’re unsure about the condition of your subfloor area, now is the time to check.
